Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Erica magnisylvae E.G.H.Oliv.
Higher Classification
Dicotyledons
Family
ERICACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Vulnerable D2
Assessment Date
2007/02/07
Assessor(s)
R.C. Turner & E.G.H. Oliver
Justification
Localized along one mountain ridge, EOO and AOO 2 km². The entire population was burnt in early 2006 during extensive fires in the southern Overberg. Frequent fire and alien plant invasion pose a potential threat.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Grootbos Nature Reserve, Gansbaai.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Agulhas Limestone Fynbos
Description
Sandy soils over calcrete with sandstone intrusions.
Threats
The small, localized population is protected in a well-managed private nature reserve. However, the entire population was killed in 2006 in a wildfire which burnt large areas of natural vegetation in and outside the reserve. Should fires reoccur within a short time frame, this species is likely to decline or become extinct within a very short time. Natural vegetation outside the reserve is extensively infested by alien invasive plants. Invasive species have been cleared inside the reserve, but requires ongoing management to prevent reinvasion.
Population

Erica magnisylvae has a small, extremely localized population.
