Family
ERICACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Near Threatened D2
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
A range-restricted species with an area of occupancy (AOO) of 44 km². It is potentially vulnerable to alien invasive plants which could spread rapidly if they are not managed properly. In addition, droughts could increase pressure on groundwater resources, on which this seep-preferring species is dependent. It nearly meets thresholds for Vulnerable, and is therefore listed as Near Threatened.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is restricted to the southern Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, Hangklip Sand Fynbos
Description
It grows in seeps and marshy flats at low altitudes.
Threats
This species' habitat is intact and protected in the Table Mountain National Park. Part of the Cape Peninsula was formerly densely invaded with alien species, which were outcompeting native species. There were extensive clearing efforts in the early 2000s, but ongoing management and clearing is needed to prevent reinvasions. Ongoing monitoring is needed, particularly as droughts in the Western Cape increase pressure on groundwater resources, on which this seep-preferring species is dependent.
Population

There is one continuous subpopulation within the Cape Peninsula which is not suspected to be in danger of extinction.

Population trend
Stable
Conservation
It is conserved in Table Mountain National Park.
