Justification
EOO 428 km², plants at four known locations continue to decline due to competition from alien invasive plants and habitat loss to protea cultivation. This taxon is also potentially threatened by habitat loss to coastal development.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Pearly Beach to Cape Agulhas.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Agulhas Limestone Fynbos, Agulhas Sand Fynbos
Description
Seasonally damp sandy coastal flats.
Threats
Plants at three of four known locations are threatened by competition from dense alien invasive plant infestations. At one site, on private property, alien plants have been cleared by landowners, however, after a fire in early 2006, alien recruitment was observed to be extremely high, and ongoing management and clearing is required (R.C. Turner, pers. obs.). A subpopulation within the Agulhas National Park is affected by very old, dense infestations of alien invasive wattles, but is being cleared. Plants at a fourth location is threatened by habitat loss to expanding protea cultivation for the cut flower industry. Other potential threats include habitat loss to coastal and golf estate developments around Cape Agulhas.
