Scientific Name | Erica diotiflora Salisb. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2012/09/03 |
Assessor(s) | R.C. Turner, L. von Staden & D. Raimondo |
Justification | EOO 10 km². This species is known from only two well-documented historical locations, but has not been found again at these sites. At one location there was only one plant remaining in 1995, and at another, which was last monitored in the 1970s, the area is how extensively transformed and degraded, particularly due to dense alien plant infestations. Surveys across the lower slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains around Greyton are still needed to determine whether or not any subpopulations survive. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Riviersonderend Mountains near Greyton. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Greyton Shale Fynbos |
Description | Fynbos, on lower, south-facing mountain slopes. |
Threats |
This species was last observed in the Greyton Nature Reserve in 1995, where only one plant was recorded, and another subpopulation about 10 km further east was last monitored in the 1970s, where the subpopulation was declining due to a lack of fire. This area has also been affected by ongoing transformation for crop cultivation and forestry plantations, and the lower Soetmelks River Valley is densely invaded with unmanaged alien invasive plants. |
Population |
This species was last recorded in 1995, and very little is known about its population. From historical records, there are two known subpopulations about 10 km apart. Urgent surveys are needed to determine whether this species still survives as well as the size and trends of the population.
