Scientific Name | Erica eburnea Salter |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2022/11/09 |
Assessor(s) | F. Munro, R.C. Turner & E.G.H. Oliver |
Justification | A range-restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 24 km², it occurs only in the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park in the Olifantsbos area. Invasive alien plant species are present within this section of the Park but alien clearing is ongoing, should clearing efforts be stopped then this species would become rapidly threatened. It therefore qualifies for listing as Vulnerable under criterion D2. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is restricted to the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Cape Flats Dune Strandveld, Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in wetlands and adjacent seepage areas. |
Threats |
Although drought-related mortality events pose a slight threat, invasive vegetation i.e. Acacia cyclops and Acacia saligna are posing a direct and immediate threat to this range-restricted species. |
Population |
This species grows in large numbers in suitable wetland habitat. It is difficult to distinguish from Erica capensis hence understanding the population size is challenging.
|
Population trend | Stable |
Conservation |
It is conserved in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. |
