Description
Shale, granite and ferricrete soil on flats, as well as ecotonal areas with sandstone fynbos on lower slopes.
Threats
Habitat loss to orchards, vineyards, forestry plantations and dam construction have caused extensive population decline in the past, particularly in the northern part of this species' range between Paarl and the Palmiet River Valley near Grabouw. Subpopulations on clay soils on lower slopes and flats are now virtually extinct, while remaining subpopulations predominantly occur on Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos which is unsuitable for cultivation. Most of these remaining subpopulations are however threatened by competition from dense infestations of alien invasive plants, as well as too frequent fire near Franschhoek.
Population

This taxon was formerly widespread from Paarl to Kleinmond and Elgin, but due to habitat loss is now restricted to the area between Franschhoek, the Kogelberg Mountains and the northern slopes of the Kleinrivier Mountains. Subpopulations in the mountains near Franschhoek and the Kogelberg area are large, consisting of many thousands of individuals, but some subpopulations have become isolated and fragmented due to habitat loss.
