Scientific Name | Erica fontana L.Bolus |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2022/08/31 |
Assessor(s) | F. Munro & R.C. Turner |
Justification | A range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 56 km², that occurs at between six and 10 threat based locations. Despite this species occurring in the Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain Nation Park, there is ongoing degradation of its habitat as a result of the spread of invasive alien plants. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is restricted to the Cape Peninsula, it occurs in the Cape Point Section of the Table Mountain National Park, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. |

Alien invasive species including Acacia saligna and Acacia longifolia are spreading within this species' habitat and causing ongoing habitat degradation. |
Population |
Although very restricted in distribution, this species is locally abundant, with the population estimated to consist of more than 17 000 plants. The population is inferred to be declining at a slow rate due to the presence of invasive alien plant species.
|
