Justification
Erica atrovinosa is a very localized species (EOO 11 km²), restricted to three peaks in the western Hex River Mountains, where it occurs in small, scattered clumps, with the total population size estimated to number fewer than 1000 mature individuals. In addition, as a reseeder it is potentially threatened by too frequent fire.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Hex River Mountains, from Waaihoek to Milner Peak.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
North Hex Sandstone Fynbos
Description
High altitude upper north-facing slopes on sandstone ridges and shale bands.
Threats
This reseeder is potentially threatened by too frequent fires - Waaihoek and Milner peaks have burnt twice within eight years. This species is poorly branched, and produce few flowers, with the result that seed set is likely to be low, making it particularly vulnerable to too frequent fires.
Population

This species occurs as small, scattered clumps of plants on three summit peaks in the western Hex River Mountains. The largest consists of about 300 plants below Milner Ridge Peak, while elsewhere, small clumps of 50 or fewer plants are known to occur (Oliver 1967, unpublished ISEP data 1994). The total population size is estimated to be fewer than 1000 mature individuals.
