Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
Synonyms | Erica gibbosa Klotzsch ex Benth. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2020/02/18 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Erica scabriuscula is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 6640 km². In spite of ongoing habitat loss and degradation it is still extremely common, and is not yet in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found in the coastal mountains and on the coastal flats between Mossel Bay and Humansdorp. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Humansdorp Shale Renosterveld, Kouga Grassy Sandstone Fynbos, Tsitsikamma Sandstone Fynbos, South Outeniqua Sandstone Fynbos, Garden Route Shale Fynbos, Garden Route Granite Fynbos, Knysna Sand Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on lower slopes and flats in fynbos. |
Threats |
About 17% of this species' habitat is already irreversibly modified, predominantly due to historical loss to timber plantations. Plantations are no longer expanding, but subpopulations near plantations are threatened by competition from escaped pine seedlings that are spreading into native fynbos vegetation. It is also declining on the coastal lowlands due to habitat loss to urban expansion and coastal development. |
Population |
Erica scabriuscula is locally common in suitable habitat. In spite of ongoing habitat loss and degradation, it is estimated from recent field observations that it still persists at more than 40 locations.
