Scientific Name | Erica trichophylla Benth. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2018/05/24 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & N.A. Helme |
Justification | Erica trichophylla is a highly localized species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 45 km². It is known from two locations and is threatened by rapidly spreading, unmanaged alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs on middle to upper slopes in montane sandstone fynbos. |
Threats |
Escaped pine seedlings from commercial timber plantations on the lower south slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains have spread rapidly, as well as significantly increased in density over the past 15 years, and in some places there is now 100% cover. Pines are now present within one of the subpopulations, and is likely to spread to the second subpopulation in the near future. |
Population |
Erica trichophylla is a locally abundant species, known from two subpopulations within a small area. The threat of competition from alien invasive pines is increasing, and the population needs to be monitored - it is very likely to continue to decline if pines are not cleared urgently.
