Scientific Name | Erica juniperina E.G.H.Oliv. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ERICACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered D |
Assessment Date | 2018/06/07 |
Assessor(s) | R.C. Turner & E.G.H. Oliver |
Justification | Erica juniperina has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of less than 1 km². One subpopulation of less than 100 plants is known. Invasive alien pines and Hakea spp. spreading from Robinson Pass is a potential threat. It is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found in the Outeniqua Mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | South Outeniqua Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in fynbos, on cool, moist, south-facing summits and upper slopes. |
Threats |
Escaped pine seedlings are spreading from plantations on the lower slopes around Robinson Pass, and could potentially outcompete native species if left unmanaged. Too frequent fire is also a potential threat. |
Population |
Erica juniperina is known from a single, small subpopulation numbering about 100 plants.
|
Population trend | Stable |
Conservation |
It is conserved in Outeniqua (Ruitersbos) Nature Reserve, although there is a serious pine and Hakea invasion in Robinson Pass. |
