Assessment Date | 2015/05/15 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & P.C.V. Van Wyk |
Justification | EOO 833 km², known from two locations but likely to be more common than records suggest. It continues to decline due to ongoing habitat degradation due to overgrazing across its range. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | Steinkopf to Alexander Bay. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Central Richtersveld Mountain Shrubland, Namaqualand Shale Shrubland, Western Gariep Lowland Desert |
Description | Flat stony ground among karroid bushes. |
Threats |
The western plains of the Richtersveld are severely degraded due to overgrazing, which has led to a loss of shrub cover as well as species diversity. Stocking rates in communally owned areas have increased significantly between 2002 and 2012, and most collections of this species date from the 1970s, and surveys are needed to determine how many subpopulations still survive. |
Population |
This species is only known from a few collections scattered over a wide area, and it is likely to be under-sampled. Eriospermum species are cryptic and easily overlooked, and making complete specimens for identification is difficult, because leaves and flowers appear at different times of the year. All known collections are from areas that are severely overgrazed, and the population is likely to be declining across its range.
