Scientific Name | Apodolirion lanceolatum (Thunb.) Baker |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | AMARYLLIDACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic |
Assessment Date | 2007/04/16 |
Assessor(s) | D.A. Snijman & J.E. Victor |
Justification | A taxonomically problematic species. Although fairly widely distributed in the southern Cape, inland populations differ significantly from coastal forms, and is very likely to represent two separate, range restricted taxa. Coastal plants are threatened by urban expansion and alien invasive plants, while those in the Little Karoo are threatened by severe overgrazing. Taxonomic problems need to be resolved before the extinction risk can be determined. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Barrydale to Mossel Bay. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | Among rocks in karroid lowlands coastal flats. |
Threats |
Possibly threatened by grazing. Bulbs produce only a single flower per flowering season, and flowers are often grazed, which may limit seed set and recruitment. |
Population |
Population trend | Unknown |
Conservation |
Not currently conserved in any formally protected area. |
