Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Apodolirion lanceolatum (Thunb.) Baker
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons
Family
AMARYLLIDACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2007/04/16
Assessor(s)
D.A. Snijman & J.E. Victor
Justification
A taxonomically problematic species. Although fairly widely distributed in the southern Cape, inland populations differ significantly from coastal forms, and is very likely to represent two separate, range restricted taxa. Coastal plants are threatened by urban expansion and alien invasive plants, while those in the Little Karoo are threatened by severe overgrazing. Taxonomic problems need to be resolved before the extinction risk can be determined.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Barrydale to Mossel Bay.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
Among rocks in karroid lowlands coastal flats.
Threats
Possibly threatened by grazing. Bulbs produce only a single flower per flowering season, and flowers are often grazed, which may limit seed set and recruitment.
Population
Population trend
Unknown
Conservation
Not currently conserved in any formally protected area.
