Assessment Date | 2015/09/20 |
Assessor(s) | D.A. Snijman, D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | A highly range-restricted species (EOO 30 km²), found exclusively in damp depressions (AOO <10 km²). Known from four severely fragmented subpopulations and declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Vredenburg and Langebaanweg. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Langebaan Dune Strandveld, Saldanha Flats Strandveld, Saldanha Granite Strandveld |
Description | Coastal forelands near granite rocks or limestone outcrops in damp depressions. |
Threats |
Most of this species' habitat has been transformed for crop cultivation. Plants on remaining fragments are threatened by overgrazing and further habitat loss to urban expansion. |
Population |
Recent field surveys indicate that four subpopulations remain on isolated fragments of remaining habitat on the Vredenburg Peninsula. Two subpopulations consist of between 50 and 100 plants, and two have less than 500 plants. The population size is therefore estimated to number fewer than 1500 mature individuals, and continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
