Justification
Extremely localized distribution in the Bredasdorp district, known from three locations (EOO 6 km²) and fewer than 250 mature individuals. Subpopulations are very small, consisting of around 10 mature individuals. This species has lost habitat to ploughing and its habitat continues to be degraded by trampling and grazing by livestock, and alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Bredasdorp.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Overberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
Well-drained, sandstone mountain slopes.
Threats
Much of this species' habitat on the lower slopes of the Heuningberg has been transformed for crop cultivation, with much of this agricultural expansion occurring in the past 10-15 years. Remaining subpopulations are threatened by severe overgrazing, as well as the uncontrolled spread of alien invasive plants.
Population

Observations of three subpopulations recorded no more than 11 plants in flower per subpopulation.

Population trend
Decreasing
Notes
This species is not dependent on fire to flower, although it does flower in profusion following summer fires. The habitat is vulnerable to trampling by livestock (Duncan 2003).
