Justification | Centella thesioides is a range-restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 436 km². It is known from five locations and is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants, and is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Western Cape of South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | North Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos, Breede Sand Fynbos, South Sonderend Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | It is localized to north-facing sandstone slopes at mid elevation. |
Threats |
The south-facing slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains around Greyton and McGregor are densely invaded with pines escaped from timber plantations on the lower slopes. Currently, there are only scattered pines present on the north-facing slopes, but following the rapid spread of pines on the south-facing side, these could become dense infestations within 10-15 years if left unmanaged. |
Population |
This species is very common on the middle north-facing slopes of Jonaskop in the Riviersonderend Mountains (L. von Staden pers. obs.) and on the lower northern slopes of Pilaarkop (N.A. Helme pers. obs.). The population is not suspected to be declining, but could decline in future if scattered alien invasive pines currently present in its habitat are not urgently cleared.
