Justification | EOO 1045 km², fewer than five locations continue to decline due to ongoing habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation as a result of expanding crop cultivation, overgrazing and competition from alien invasive plants. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Eendekuil to Moorreesburg and Tulbagh. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Swartland Shale Renosterveld, Breede Shale Renosterveld |
Description | Clay or ferricrete soils. |
Threats |
More than 90% of this species' habitat is already transformed, predominantly for crop cultivation. Remaining subpopulations are threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation as a result of agricultural runoff (herbicides and fertilizer), overgrazing due to overstocking of small fragments, lack of fire and competition from alien invasive plants. |
Population |
This newly described species is known from very few collections, but is likely to be overlooked, and more common than records indicate (Magee et al. 2011). However, with more than 90% of this species' lowland renosterveld habitat already transformed, it is unlikely that many more than the two recently recorded subpopulations survive, and all are likely to be confined to small, isolated remnants of natural vegetation.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
Notes |
This species flowers from February to March and is likely to be overlooked in surveys. |
