Justification
A localized, but fairly common species (EOO 244 km²), that is potentially threatened by habitat loss to mining at between five and 10 locations.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Mpumalanga
Range
Foothills of the Steenkampsberg in northern Mpumalanga, extending northwards to Sekhukhuneland.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Steenkampsberg Montane Grassland, Sekhukhune Montane Grassland
Description
Rocky sandstone outcrops in high-altitude grassland.
Threats
This species' habitat remains largely intact, and there is very little current threat to the population. Habitat loss to mining is a potential threat, but is only likely to affect a small proportion of the population (M. Lötter pers. comm.).
Population

The literature (McCoy and Lavranos 2013) reports a single known subpopulation next to a roadside. Surveys by the Mpumalanga Plant Specialist Group and Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism agency however indicates that it has a wider distribution in the Steenkampsberg extending towards Sekhukhuneland (M. Lötter pers. comm. 2014), but more surveys are needed to determine the full extent of its range. Although localized, it is fairly common within suitable habitat, and the population is not currently declining.

Population trend
Stable
Notes
This species is very similar to A. vryheidensis, and more research is needed to confirm its placement, perhaps at an infraspecific level (R.R. Klopper pers. comm. 2014). It can also be easily confused with Aloe reitzii, A. spicata and A. castanea, but is difficult to place in either of these species (M. Lötter pers. comm. 2014).
