Justification
Aloe sharoniae is a widespread species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 24 691 km². It is declining due to ongoing habitat loss and fragmentation. It is however still fairly common, occurring at more than 10 locations, and not yet in danger of extinction. It is therefore assessed as Least Concern.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
KwaZulu-Natal
Range
This species occurs in northern KwaZulu-Natal, mainly on the Maputaland coastal plain from the Tugela Mouth northwards, with isolated occurrences in central KwaZulu-Natal and eSwatini (Swaziland).
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Forest, Grassland, Indian Ocean Coastal Belt, Savanna
Description
It occurs in coastal grassland and forest margins, 45-1700 m.
Threats
Much of this species' habitat around the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park have been converted to forestry plantations and subpopulations are likely to have been destroyed in the past. Expanding rural settlements, overgrazing and subsistence farming is threatening this species at known localities in northern KwaZulu-Natal and in the Kranskop-Nkandla district.
Population

Subpopulations are often small and confined to isolated grassland fragments (Crouch and Smith 2011).
