Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v)
Assessment Date

Justification
A range-restricted species (national EOO 198 km²), known from two locations in South Africa and declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. It also has a limited distribution range within mining areas in Namibia, and therefore the national status is not adjusted, following IUCN regional assessment procedures.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
Oranjemund to Port Nolloth.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Richtersveld Coastal Duneveld, Western Gariep Lowland Desert, Western Gariep Plains Desert
Description
Sandy areas on south-western and eastern slopes of rocky outcrops and hills, within the high Atlantic fog zone close to the coast.
Threats
This species is threatened by habitat loss to mining, with most of its distribution range falling within coastal mining areas. Mining also impacts surrounding areas outside mining sites, due to dust blowing from exposed mine dumps, burying many dwarf species such as this one. Overgrazing is also a severe, ongoing threat, particularly around Alexander Bay, where stocking rates have increased tenfold since 2006.
Population

The species is currently known from a few disjunct localities along the west coast of South Africa and Namibia, but it is likely to be continuous in these coastal areas. It is highly likely to be under-sampled due to access restrictions to mining areas. Its entire range is however threatened by mining acitivities.
