Taxonomy
Scientific Name
Haworthia maculata (Poelln.) M.B.Bayer
Higher Classification
Monocotyledons

ASPHODELACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic
Assessment Date
2014/03/19
Assessor(s)
L. von Staden, D. Raimondo, R.R. Klopper & J.C. Manning
Justification
Haworthia maculata is difficult to distinguish from two other narrow endemics of the Worcester-Robertson area, H. herbacea and H. reticulata (Bayer 1982, 1999). Until taxonomically resolved, an assessment of its risk of extinction cannot be done.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Worcester to Robertson.
Habitat and Ecology

Terrestrial
Major habitats
Fynbos
Description
Quartzitic outcrops on dry lower slopes.
Population
Population trend
Unknown
Notes
Haworthia has been plagued with an overprolification of names, recognising variation over similarity, and causing much confusion (Bayer and Manning 2012). The genus needs to be revised using population-level molecular techniques in order for species concepts to be resolved (J.C. Manning pers. comm. 2014).
