|
Scientific Name | Haworthia marxii Gildenhuys |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | ASPHODELACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic |
Assessment Date | 2014/03/19 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden, R.R. Klopper & J.C. Manning |
Justification | A localized species, which is difficult to distinguish from other Haworthia species, particularly some forms of H. marumiana and Haworthia emelyae. It is most likely just a variant of one of these species, and until taxonomically resolved, an assessment of its risk of extinction cannot be made. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Witteberg Mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | Dry mountain fynbos. |
Population |
Population trend | Unknown |
Notes |
Haworthia has been plagued with an overprolification of names, recognising variation over similarity, and causing much confusion (Bayer and Manning 2012). The genus needs to be revised using population-level molecular techniques in order for species concepts to be resolved (J.C. Manning pers. comm. 2014). |
