Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
A range-restricted species (EOO 181 km²), known from fewer than 10 locations and declining due to ongoing habitat loss to expanding agriculture on sandy flats.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Southern Olifants River Valley.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Winterhoek Sandstone Fynbos, Graafwater Sandstone Fynbos
Description
Well-drained lower sandstone slopes as well as deep sandy flats.
Threats
Subpopulations occurring on deep sandy flats are threatened by ongoing habitat loss to crop cultivation - on three out of four farms where it has been recorded in the past there has been recent expansion of orchards, and on one, where the species was last recorded in 1938, it may already be locally extinct. Plants also occur in more rocky areas unsuitable to cultivation where they are unlikely to be threatened, and at least one subpopulation is protected within the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness area.
Population

Although range-restricted, this species forms quite extensive, but local populations (Linder 2011).
