Scientific Name | Cannomois arenicola H.P.Linder |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | RESTIONACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered A2c |
Assessment Date | 2020/11/24 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Cannomois arenicola is a range-restricted but very common sand plain fynbos endemic, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 3965 km². This long-lived resprouter is estimated to have lost at least 50% of its population within three generations, based on 56% habitat loss to urban and agricultural expansion, as well as degradation and competition from dense infestations of alien invasive plants. Decline is ongoing. This species is therefore listed as Endangered under criterion A. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is found in coastal lowlands from Hopefield to Gordon's Bay. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, Atlantis Sand Fynbos, Hopefield Sand Fynbos, Saldanha Flats Strandveld, Swartland Alluvium Fynbos, Cape Flats Dune Strandveld, Lourensford Alluvium Fynbos |
Description | It occurs in well-drained lowland acid sandy plains. |
Threats |
At least 56% of this formerly abundant species' habitat is already transformed due to urban and agricultural expansion, as well as dense, unmanaged infestations of alien invasive plants, and loss is continuing. |
Population |
An extremely common, often dominant species of sandy plains, however, more than 50% of its habitat has been transformed and fragmented within three generations - this is a long-lived resprouter, very rarely recruiting from seed (Linder 2011). Although still very common in sand plain fynbos, a population reduction of at least 50% within three generations is estimated based on habitat loss, and decline is continuing.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
Notes |
This species has recently been separated from the widespread and common Cannomois parviflora, which occurs in montane sandstone fynbos (Linder 2011). |
