National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Taxonomically Problematic |
Assessment Date | 2011/11/29 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & L. von Staden |
Justification | An apparently very rare, range-restricted, but also very poorly known species which may not be sufficiently distinct from the widespread Anisodontea biflora. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | Eastern Swartberg Mountain between Uniondale and Willowmore. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Fynbos |
Description | Lower north-facing sandstone slopes. |
Threats |
The threats to this species are unknown. It may have lost habitat to timber plantations around George, and is also possibly threatened by competition from alien invasive plants. |
Population |
A rare and very poorly known species. At the time of the last revision (Bates 1969), it was known from only two collections, both from unspecified localities in the George district. There has been only two further collections, however, nothing is known about the subpopulations that were sampled.

Population trend | Unknown |
Notes |
Anisodontea alexandri is a very poorly known species, and its placement within the genus uncertain (Bates 1969). The fragmentary type material makes the evaluation of the validity of this species difficult, and very few other collections have been matched to the description to date. In the Conspectus of the Cape Flora (Goldblatt and Manning 2000), A. alexandri is treated as a synonym of A. biflora. The genus is in need of revision. |
