Assessor(s) | J.E. Victor & L. von Staden |
Justification | This taxon is known from only two collections (one identification remains uncertain), from a botanically very poorly explored part of South Africa, where it may be overlooked, but is also likely to be threatened by habitat loss and degradation. Not enough is known about this taxon at present to determine its status. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | Umtata to Coffee Bay. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Forest |
Description | Forest margins. |
Threats |
Forests in the former Transkei area of the Eastern Cape are threatened by destruction and degradation as a result of encroachment from alien invasive plants, wood harvesting, and wildfires. |
Population |
This taxon is known only from the type, collected in 1896 at an unspecified locality near Umtata. Another record from further south near Coffee Bay may be this variety, but the identification remains uncertain. It occurs in one of the botanically most poorly explored parts of South Africa, where plants are still likely to remain at least in some of the protected forests along the Eastern Cape's Wild Coast.
