Scientific Name | Duvalia angustiloba N.E.Br. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | APOCYNACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2019/11/04 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Duvalia angustiloba is a widespread, but rarely recorded species. It is possibly threatened by overgrazing, but currently available data indicate that it is not in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa. It is widespread across the southern Great Karoo, from Beaufort West and Victoria West to Rietbron and Aberdeen. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Eastern Upper Karoo, Eastern Lower Karoo, Gamka Karoo, Southern Karoo Riviere, Eastern Gwarrieveld |
Description | It occurs sheltered among shrubs on dry flats with gravel or firm loam, as well as in dolerite outcrops. |
Threats |
Duvalia angustiloba is possibly threatened by overgrazing, which has reduced shrub cover in many parts of the Great Karoo. It is dependent on the shelter of shrubs for survival. |
Population |
This species is widespread, but known from only a few, scattered records. It is easily overlooked, and its range is botanically poorly explored, and therefore it may be more common than records suggest. On the other hand, it may be declining due to overgrazing. More field surveys and monitoring is needed to determine the population trend, which is not known at present.
