Scientific Name | Sisyranthus franksiae N.E.Br. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | APOCYNACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Insufficient Information |
Assessment Date | 2015/05/29 |
Assessor(s) | H. Mtshali & L. von Staden |
Justification | The genus Sisyranthus is in need of revision. The type specimen of S. franksiae is from an unknown locality in KwaZulu-Natal. Recent collections from St Lucia and Richard's Bay have been identified as this species, but Ashley Nicholas, expert on this group, noted that these plants do not match the type exactly. They may be a separate subspecies, in which case Sisyranthus franksiae itself remains poorly known, and should probably be classified as Data Deficient. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | KwaZulu-Natal |
Range | Precise distribution uncertain. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Indian Ocean Coastal Belt |
Description | Unknown, possibly wetlands, marshes or swamps. |
Threats |
If this species occurs on the northern coastal plain of KwaZulu-Natal, it is likely to have lost habitat to forestry plantations in the past, and rapidly expanding rural settlements is likely to be an ongoing threat. |
