Description | Grassy vegetation on stabilized dunes within 20 km of the coast. |
Threats |
This subspecies' coastal habitat is extensively transformed and degraded, predominantly as a result of the establishment of timber plantations, and less than 40% remains. Most of the remaining habitat is protected in an extensive network of private and national conservancies, where areas formerly under plantations have been rehabilitated. Forb species such as Pachycarpus concolor however are very slow to re-establish in rehabilitated areas. Overgrazing by livestock as well as indigenous game is causing ongoing grassland degradation within and outside of protected areas, and many grasslands are burnt very frequently to promote pasture growth. Too frequent fire however appears to not have a negative impact as Goyder and Condy (2003) report plants growing in short, annually burnt grasslands. In some areas, habitat loss to expanding subsistence farming is also ongoing.
Habitat in Mozambique is well-preserved and not subjected to heavy population pressure (Goyder and Condy 2003). |
