Description
Steep, south-facing quartzite, schist and gneiss slopes, under bushes or between rocks.
Threats
In the Gariep Valley between Arrisdrift and Annisfontein it is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to mining. At Helskloof, on the Ploegberg and around Lekkersing it is potentially threatened by habitat degradation and trampling due to overstocking of livestock, although its habitat on steep slopes may be inaccessible to livestock. In Namibia this species is threatened by collecting for the succulent trade (Loots 2005), however, plants are easily grown from cuttings, making it unnecessary to remove mature individuals from the wild, which may reduce the severity of this threat. Parts of this species' range is under severe collecting pressure (P.C.V. van Wyk pers. obs.).
Population

This species is a rare and localized habitat specialist, known from only a few, scattered subpopulations. In South Africa it is known from only six locations, one which may already be locally extinct due to habitat loss to mining. There are two known locations in Namibia (Loots 2005).
