Justification | This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 91 000 km² and is suspected to occur in over 30 subpopulations. As it is not suspected to be declining, it is listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West |
Range | It is endemic to South Africa and is found in the North West, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Grassland, Savanna |
Description | Plants grow in deep black turf in open woodland mainly in the vicinity of drainage lines. |
Threats |
In some parts of the distribution area of this species, the habitat has been transformed e.g. due to urban expansion on the northern boundary of Pretoria, and in the North West province the habitat was transformed due to open-cast mining of platinum and chrome, as well as crop cultivation in the past. However the distribution range is extremely wide and many untransformed areas of habitat remain. This plant also favours disturbed areas, and grows prolifically after disturbance has occurred. |
Population |
This species is very cryptic, and was not recorded for more than a century before it was rediscovered in 2003. Initially it was thought to be very rare, however, field surveys located many large subpopulations that were previously overlooked. It also appears that the species is favoured by disturbance, as repeated surveys in frequently disturbed areas recorded marked increases in the number of mature individuals after disturbance events.

Population trend | Stable |
Conservation |
It is not recorded from any formally protected areas. |
