National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2018/06/05 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | Cephalaria rigida is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 3 208 km². It is potentially threatened in places by competition from alien invasive plants, but is not yet considered in danger of extinction. It is therefore listed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa, where it occurs from Du Toit's Kloof to Sir Lowry's Pass, as well as on the Kleinrivier Mountains and the Cape Peninsula. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Peninsula Granite Fynbos, Boland Granite Fynbos, Elim Ferricrete Fynbos, Western Coastal Shale Band Vegetation |
Description | It occurs in damp, shallow gullies and on cooler, south-facing lower slopes in richer, loamy soils derived from granite or on shale bands. |
Threats |
Cephalaria rigida has lost habitat to timber plantations in Jonkershoek, Cape Peninsula and the lower slopes of the Hottentots Holland Mountains in the past. Expansion of plantations has ceased, and this is no longer a severe threat. Alien invasive plants, particularly escaped pine seedlings, is however an ongoing threat at Du Toit's Kloof and Sir Lowry's Pass. |
Population |
This species flowers only in the first few years after fire, and may be overlooked in mature vegetation. It is currently known from eight locations, but it is likely that more exist.
