Justification
A single subpopulation of fewer than 1000 mature individuals, confined to an EOO of 6 km² and an estimated two to five locations continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss to coastal development and competition from alien invasive plants.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Hangklip Sand Fynbos
Description
Lower slopes and sandy flats, often in seasonally damp sand, 18-80 m.
Threats
Disa sabulosa is known from historical records to have occurred on the Cape Peninsula, but has not been recorded there in more than 45 years, despite the area being well surveyed, and is presumed extinct in this area due to urban expansion, alien plant invasion and inappropriate fire regimes. Currently, the species is known from a small area between Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay, where it is confined to lowland Hangklip Sand Fynbos, which is already 50% transformed due to ongoing expansion of coastal development. In addition, this species is also threatened by competition from alien invasive plants.
Population

All recent collections (last 40 years or so) for Disa sabulosa are from between Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay, all the plants in this area should be considered a single subpopulation (B. Bytebier pers. comm. 2005). After a recent fire in 2008, between 350 and 500 plants were recorded in an area of about 60 hectares.
