Justification | Disa karooica is a widespread species, with a restricted extent of occurrence (EOO) of 8979 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 36 km². It is a rare species, known from nine locations and threatened by overgrazing in the Kamiesberg and on the Roggeveld Escarpment. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to Namaqualand and the Roggeveld Plateau of South Africa, where it is known from isolated subpopulations around Springbok, in the Kamiesberg and Sutherland. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Namaqualand Klipkoppe Shrubland, Namaqualand Granite Renosterveld, Kamiesberg Granite Fynbos |
Description | It is localized to damp depressions in granite and shale rock sheets and ledges in arid areas. |
Threats |
Overgrazing is a threat to plants occurring in communally owned areas of the Kamiesberg. The Roggeveld Escarpment has also suffered decline of grass species due to heavy grazing (Liltved and Johnson, unpubl.). There has also been historical habitat loss to crop cultivation in the Kamiesberg and around Kamieskroon. |
Population |
Subpopulations of Disa karooica are small and widely scattered. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat degradation.
