Description
Edges of flat Black Reef Quartzite rock flushes, in damp to wet conditions, and often in moss, substrate rarely deeper than 10 mm.
Threats
Habitat loss or degradation as a result of the establishment of timber plantations has probably caused unknown declines in the past. It is however unlikely that the specific habitat of this species - shallow rocky soils at the edges of streams are to be directly transformed by pine plantations, but plantations may result in degradation on the habitat. Mining is a potential threat - a number of mining applications are under review for mining around Graskop. Parts of the habitat of this species which is protected in the provincial Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve is under land claim (M. Lotter pers. comm.) and it is not certain whether the claimants would preserve the area as a nature reserve.
Population

Subpopulations are generally large, up to 200 plants. However, there are probably very few subpopulations, as the highly specialized habitat only exist at the headwaters of streams. (Linder 1980). However, according to personal observations of Lourens Grobler, this species is plentiful and occurs wherever there is suitable habitat.
