Scientific Name | Argyrolobium muddii Dummer |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered A2c; B1ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2006/05/19 |
Assessor(s) | T.J. Edwards & D. Raimondo |
Justification | EOO 4200 km² and five locations remain. Extensive areas of the habitat has been transformed to forestry plantations within the last 100 years, a period shorter than three generations of this long-lived species (generation length estimated to be >50 years). The estimate of >50% reduction in the population is based on >80% habitat loss in the Woodbush area (Limpopo Province) and >50% habitat loss around Graskop and Pilgrims Rest, Mpumalanga. Decline is continuing due to habitat degradation as a result of alien plant invasions and poor fire management. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | Haenertsburg and Graskop. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Woodbush Granite Grassland, Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld, Northern Escarpment Dolomite Grassland |
Description | Mistbelt Grassland. |
Threats |
Plantations were a severe past threat. In the Woodbush area, over 80% of this species' habitat has been irreversibly modified to pine plantations while over 50% of its habitat was lost in the Graskop area. Remaining subpopulations are threatened by competition from alien invasive plants, as well as the reduction of fires as a result of grassland fragmentation - this species is unable to recruit without fire. |
