Scientific Name | Argyrolobium angustissimum (E.Mey.) T.J.Edwards |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered D |
Assessment Date | 2011/06/14 |
Assessor(s) | K. Marais, H. Stummer, I. Ebrahim, D. Raimondo & T.J. Edwards |
Justification | Previously listed as possibly extinct in the Red List of South African Plants (Raimondo et al. 2009) as it had not been collected for more than 100 years, despite its only known location, Paarl Mountain, being very well explored. Fortunately, volunteers from the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) programme relocated this species in late 2009 after a fire on Paarl Mountain. Demographic surveys by CREW volunteers in 2010 indicate very few individuals remain. Sixteen plants were monitored, but the entire population on the mountain is suspected to be less than 250 individuals. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Paarl Mountain. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Boland Granite Fynbos |
Description | Granite fynbos. |
Threats |
No severe threats, this species does appear to require fire for flowering and regeneration, and very long intervals between fires on Paarl Mountain may be impacting on the population. |
Population |
Only 25 plants were counted during the monitoring surveys conducted by the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) Programme volunteers in 2010. The species is likely to be more common after a fire, (K. Marais pers. comm.), but even after fire there were still very few individuals that occur sparsely distributed.
