Taxonomy
Scientific Name

Higher Classification

Family
FABACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Endangered A2c; B1ab(iii)
Assessment Date
2009/07/29
Assessor(s)
T.J. Edwards & D. Raimondo
Justification
A population reduction of more than 80% is estimated based on >84% habitat loss to wheat cultivation since 1940 (less than three generations of this long-lived resprouter generation length suspected to be 50 years). EOO <4000 km², seven locations are known through herbarium collections, but two are now locally extinct due to agriculture. Remaining subpopulations are declining due to alien plant invasions and overgrazing by livestock. It is therefore assessed as Endangered under criteria A and B.

Description
Plants grow in fynbos-renosterveld ecotones below 400 m.
Threats
Agriculture was a severe past threat and over 84% of this species' habitat was transformed since 1940 (less than three generations of this long-lived resprouting species). Two of the four historic locations no longer exist. Alien plants are a severe threat in the Elim area and are a moderate current and future threat at Potberg. Overgrazing by game is a moderate current threat at Potberg.
