Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Priestleya schlechteri L.Bolus |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2005/05/31 |
Assessor(s) | N.A. Helme, D. Raimondo & F. Daniels |
Justification | EOO<100 km², AOO<10 km², six known locations. There is a continuing decline in habitat quality and the number of mature individuals due to rooibos tea cultivation. Although this species' specific habitat is not ploughed there is a lack of fire taking place as a result of the tea plantations. This species is a reseeder that requires fires to recruit. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape, Western Cape |
Range | Nieuwoudtville escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | Arid montane fynbos on rocky outcrops, 660-780 m. |
Threats |
This species does not occur in a conservation area. Deteriorating quality of habitat occurs due to inappropriate land management (lack of appropriate fire management regimes) by farmers. The plant is a reseeder. It does in fact occur in Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, but management by Northern Cape Nature Conservation is not well resourced. As it grows on deep sands, the ideal soils for rooibos, it could be threatened in future by tea farming - this is very real threat. Alien invasion by pines threatens its habitat. |
Population |
Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
It is conserved in Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve. |
