Passerina truncata subsp. truncata is common throughout the Western Cape and some parts of the Northern Cape. It is recorded from 134 herbarium records. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 57 000 km², and parts of this species range are being impacted by crop cultivation. It is listed as Least Concern.

It occurs on slopes and flats in Fynbos and Succulent Karoo.
