Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Limpopo, Mpumalanga
Range
This species occurs from the Wolkberg in Limpopo to Mariepskop and Graskop in Mpumalanga.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Northern Escarpment Quartzite Sourveld, Long Tom Pass Montane Grassland, Northern Escarpment Afromontane Fynbos
Description
it occurs in montane grassland and Afromontane fynbos on quartzitic soils, often among rocks.
Threats
This species is threatened by competition from unmanaged, spreading alien invasive plants at Serala Peak and The Downs in the Wolkberg. At both these localities it is also potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to overgrazing, as domestic livestock are allowed to graze within protected wilderness areas. Between Pilgrim's Rest, Graskop and Mariepskop, this species has lost some habitat to timber plantations in the past, but plantations are no longer expanding, and most of this species' remaining habitat is now well-protected.
Population

This species is known from nine subpopulations, but is probably more common as a large section of suitable habitat in the Thabakgolo Mountains above the Olifants River Valley remains botanically poorly explored. Most herbarium collections record this species as locally common. The population is not suspected to be declining, but requires monitoring.
