National Status
Status and Criteria
Critically Endangered A2bc
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)

Justification
A population reduction of at least 80% is estimated based on 83% habitat loss to wheat cultivation over the past 70 years, which is within three generations of this slow-growing, long-lived reseeder (generation length at least 50 years). Two small subpopulations remain on renosterveld remnants, one with only two individuals, the other at the Hantam Botanic Garden numbering 600 individuals.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Northern Cape
Range
Bokkeveld Escarpment, Nieuwoudtville.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Nieuwoudtville Shale Renosterveld
Description
Rocky, sandy flats on Dwyka tillite clay.
Threats
At least 80% of this species habitat has been lost to wheat cultivation in the past 50 years. Remaining fragments are heavily grazed. Although this long-lived resprouter persists even under heavy grazing pressure, monitoring of the largest remaining subpopulation at the Hantam Botanical Garden revealed that plants do not flower when heavily grazed, and this species may continue to decline in the long term due to lack of recruitment.
Population

Two remaining subpopulations consist of 2 and 600 plants respectively. Population estimates are based on surveys in 2009 and 2010. Monitoring revealed that recruitment is very poor.
