Justification
Euryops zeyheri is only known from the type collection, and has not been recorded in the wild for more than 100 years, despite field surveys to relocate it. Its habitat is still intact, but it may be dependent on very specific climatic conditions to flower, or otherwise it is possibly extinct due to overgrazing. It is listed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct).
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is known from a single collection along the Gamka River in the Beaufort West district.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Southern Karoo Riviere
Description
Its specific habitat is not known, but it is suspected to occur in clays associated with riverbeds.
Threats
Threats to Euryops zeyheri are unknown, but it may have gone extinct due to heavy grazing. Many members of this genus are highly palatable and do not survive heavy grazing.
Population

This species is only known from the type collection, dating from more than 100 years ago. The area has been repeatedly searched for this species between 1988 and 2000 (J.H. Vlok pers. comm.), and although many other species that were found by the same collectors at the time that the type specimen was collected have been located, this particular species remains lost. It is possibly extremely rare, or otherwise it may be extinct.
