Justification
Restricted to coastal grasslands of northern KwaZulu-Natal that are extensively transformed. EOO has declined from 17 600 km² to 13 600 km², due to habitat loss in the southern end of the range. Extant at 6-9 locations, and there is a continuing decline in the habitat outside of reserves due to small-scale subsistence agriculture and overgrazing.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
KwaZulu-Natal
Range
Formerly widespread along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal from Stanger northwards, now only occurring around St. Lucia and Ngoye Forest. It also occurs in southern Mozambique.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Maputaland Wooded Grassland, Maputaland Coastal Belt
Description
Coastal grassland, marshy depressions, sometimes on granite domes.
Threats
Maputaland coastal grasslands are 46% transformed, mainly by commercial sugarcane and forestry plantations, and this has probably caused extensive declines in this species in the past, but the exact loss in terms of proportion of the population or habitat lost is not known. There is a current ongoing decline in the habitat, mainly due to subsistence farming, planting of cash crops and severe overgrazing.
