Scientific Name | Cineraria dryogeton Cron |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2007/11/14 |
Assessor(s) | P.A. Manyama |
Justification | It has a very restricted distribution and is known from one location at present but is likely to be under collected, we suspect that it occurs at five locations. It is potentially threatened by a deleterious fire regime. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | KwaZulu-Natal |
Range | Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Scarp Forest, Pondoland-Ugu Sandstone Coastal Sourveld |
Description | Grasslands near forest margins, and forest margins near waterfalls, in sandy loam soil on sandstone, 300-400 m. |
Threats |
Two known subpopulations are well protected within the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. Outside of the reserve, coastal grasslands and forests are however extensively transformed and degraded (Abbott et al. 2000), and this species is likely to be threatened if it also occurs outside of the reserve. |
Population |
A rare, narrow endemic.
