Justification | A species endemic to the Western Cape Province, South Africa. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 8764 km. Known from at least seven locations, it appears to be rare. The quality of habitat is declining due to habitat degradation. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species endemic to the Western Cape Province, where it occurs from Hermanus to Gouritz. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Mossel Bay Shale Renosterveld, Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld, Central Ruens Shale Renosterveld |
Description | It occurs on damp clay soils. |
Threats |
More than 80% of this species' habitat has been transformed into crop cultivation and urban development, and only small remnants remain. These fragments are typically unsuitable for cultivation, but are often overstocked with livestock, causing ongoing degradation. Spreading alien invasive plants, which include woody shrubs and trees, are likely a threat to all the remaining subpopulations. |
Population |
Seven to ten subpopulations are estimated to remain. However, the population size and trend are unknown. Monitoring is required to determine the size and extent of the population. It is inferred that the population is declining due to habitat loss and degradation.
