ASTERACEAE
National Status
Status and Criteria
Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)
Assessment Date

Assessor(s)
L. von Staden
Justification
A rare, localized species (EOO 156 km²), known from only five locations and declining due to competition from alien invasive plants and habitat loss to development.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
Pearly Beach to Cape Agulhas.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Agulhas Limestone Fynbos
Description
Low limestone ridges in coastal and lowland fynbos.
Threats
This species is threatened by competition from dense, unmanaged infestations of alien invasive plants across its range. The subpopulation at the type locality is now locally extinct due to habitat loss to coastal development, and a second subpopulation nearby is also under threat from a proposed development. Another site where this species has been recorded has been earmarked for a potential power plant development.
Population

A localized and apparently rare species that is nowhere abundant (Nordenstam 2004). Subpopulations are small and isolated.

Decreasing
