Threats |
This species is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to mining along the Gariep Valley. Elsewhere, it is possibly threatened by overgrazing. Records with precise locality details are from upper slopes on the central mountains of the Richtersveld, where grazing pressure is currently low. Most other records are from the eastern Richtersveld, where grazing pressure is also not as severe as on the western plains. |
Population |
Othonna graveolens is rare and poorly known in South Africa, where it has been recorded from six widely scattered localities. It is a tall shrub (1-2 meters high), and therefore not easily overlooked. The genus Othonna is in need of revision, and the lack of records may also be due to difficulties with species identifications. In southern Namibia it is restricted to the mountains between Aus and the Orange River (Merxmüller 1965).
