Scientific Name | Gnaphalium declinatum L.f. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
Synonyms | Gnaphalium achilleoides Lam., Gnaphalium pentheri Gand., Gnaphalium pygmaeum Thunb., Helichrysum declinatum (L.f.) Less., Spiralepis declinata (L.f.) D.Don |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Near Threatened B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v) |
Assessment Date | 2007/02/28 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & R.C. Turner |
Justification | Although fairly widespread (EOO 11900 km²) and locally common where occurring around pans, its habitat is threatened throughout its range by alien species (that cause desiccation of pans), livestock trampling, and crop cultivation. It is known from fewer than 15 locations. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Sir Lowry's Pass to Mossel Bay. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Agulhas Limestone Fynbos, Albertinia Sand Fynbos, Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos |
Description | Seasonal pans on flats or lower slopes. |
Threats |
This species' habitat is already extensively transformed for crop cultivation, and habitat loss is continuing. Remaining subpopulations are also threatened by overgrazing and trampling due to high density stocking of small fragments of natural vegetation and competition from alien invasive plants. |
Population |
Population trend | Decreasing |
