Justification
Chrysocoma strigosa is a range-restricted limestone endemic, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2487 km². It is known from nine locations, and is declining due to competition from alien invasive plants and habitat loss to coastal development. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to South Africa, and is localized to the southern Cape coast, where it is found from Cape Agulhas to Stilbaai.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Canca Limestone Fynbos, De Hoop Limestone Fynbos, Overberg Dune Strandveld, Agulhas Limestone Fynbos, Hartenbos Dune Thicket
Description
It occurs on coastal limestone flats.
Threats
Chrysocoma strigosa is threatened by competition from dense infestations of alien invasive plants across its range. Clearing efforts are ongoing. It is also threatened by habitat loss to coastal development around Struisbaai, Arniston and Stilbaai. A small proportion of limestone fynbos between De Hoop and Stilbaai has been ploughed for crops, but the habitat is only marginally suited to crop cultivation. Veld management for thatch harvesting is also causing degradation in some areas, but the impact of thatch harvesting on this species is not known.
Population

The size and structure of the population is not known, but according to herbarium specimen notes, it can be locally common. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
